I need to add a second search domain for my Mac OS X client workstations which running 10.5 and 10.6. I have configured my Windows 2008 server with DHCP Option 119 (search domains). It doesn't appear that Mac OS X knows what to to do with the option.
Tee ipconfig getpacket en0 command line tool shows all the DHCP options on my Mac client, but option 119 is null: domain_search (dns_namelist): {}
The scutil --dns command line tool doesnt show a second search domain
The Network Preferences pane GUI only shows my main default search domain, it doesnt show the second domain.
According to the system config file in /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/IPConfiguration.bundle/Contents/Resources/IPConfiguration.xml, It shows that DHCP Option 119 is available.
I dont want to manually edit the /etc/resolv.conf file. Id prefer to do it dynamically with DHCP.
In 2002 Microsoft and Apple proposed a DHCP Extension to allow the DNS Search Order to be set as part of the dynamic setup , which became RFC3397 . That way the appropriate search order could be set centrally along with the other DNS and IP information -- and more importantly an appropriate DNS search string could set for each network that you connect to.
